Accurate copy of the film magazine total film

Making an accurate copy of a film magazine

My copy of the film magazine, I used Photoshop to create this film magazine. This magazine has the Sherlock Holmes character in the foreground of the magazine and has a spooky faded background to connote the genre of the film. The magazine has your normal magazine conventions such as a barcode in the bottom right hand corner, the 'Total Film' magazine name in bold placed a few inches from the top of the magazine allowing other films that are in the magazine to be advertised. There are also persuasive quotes and slogans to entice the audience to read the magazine.

Watch film trailers - Split

Watching and analysing Psychological thriller film trailers

Split:

Released in in January 2017, staring James McAvoy who is a man whose identity disorder has fragmented his psyche into more than 20 different personalities.

Film Trailer link:

Analyses of the film trailer:

The film trailer of split starts off with non diegetic sound that is a high pitched noise of glasses clanging together. The music creates a mysterious feel to the start of the film trailer giving the genre to the audience straight away without having to see the whole trailer. It then goes into a tracking shot of three teenage girls and a man walking in a straight line through a car park, these characters are shown through a birds eye view shot.

Fast past cross cuts are used to show that something or someone dangerous is approaching the man at the boot of the car as he putting the shopping away. A close up of the mans face is shown at the end of the fast past cross cuts, this connotes his fear of what is in front of him. Also to add to this whatever is approaching him is demonstrated through a point of view shot to make it look as though the thing approaching him is the camera man.
To add to this the non diegetic music has a loud 'boom' to it as it cross cuts to the girls sat in the girl then the diegetic sound of the girls chatting fades in.

Non diegetic sound is used to create suspense in the trailer, a sudden loud drop noise is used as the girl in the front seat of the car notices something isn't right. A close up shot of the side mirror on the car shows the food that the man was carrying had been dropped on the floor.

A mid shot shows the main actor James McAvoy, he has both arms stretch out onto the car steering wheel and has his eyes looking straight ahead of him. He looks very serious and as though he is a danger to the girls sat in the car. One of the girls in the back of the car says "Hey pardon me sir I think you have the wrong car" and as she says that he turns around with a white hygiene mask over his mouth and nose and sprays something from a white ganister and knocks the girls out.

A loud non diegetic noise is made and then the acting fades to black and the film company logo and name is presented onto the screen.

This then cuts into a tracking shot of under ground pipes moving towards an arch under ground, this goes along with non diegetic sound of loud high notes spaced out from each other to create tension. One of the voices of the girls says '"what are we doing here" and then another one says "what the hell is going on".

One of the girls whispers "what are we doing here",
over the top of the non diegetic music that is causing more tension to go with the fast past shots.
This then flashes back to the underground shot of the pipes and the arch way. And then flashes back to the main character Kevin walking through a wooden door. And he say's in a creepy voice " I was sent to get you for a reason", this shows his mind is being controlled by something or someone else and links to the psychological thriller genre of the film.

This then goes into a loud scream for help when one the girls shouts "No open the door" . The music becomes louder and the motion tracking shot towards the dark arch underground becomes faster and closes to the end of the pipes. As the girl shouts "No open the door" a long shot is shown of the main character Kevin drilling a door shut, this connotes to the audience that he has power over the girls and is the main focus of the film.   This along with the creepy music is very stereotypical of psychological thriller genre films to have. This is because these films aim to create the audience to feel anxious of what is going to happen during the film and to have the sitting on the edge of your seat effect.

One of the girls realises that there's several yellow flowers placed around where they're being held hostage.  She say's "There's a flower on the pillows, a flower in the bathroom like we're important". And then another girl who is crying and feeling scared says " the only way we have of escaping is if we all go crazy on this guy". It then shows the girls looking through the gap in the door of the room they're being kept in, they can see a lady in a skirt who is wearing high heels. One of the girls says " Who is that maybe she can help us" and over the top of that another girl screams "we're here help us, please, we're in here" pleading for help. However the film has a twist as it introduces a new character to the audience, Kevin dressed up as a women and showing the audience one of his many different personalities. The audience will feel for the girls as they think that by seeing this women it is someone different to Kevin and that this women will help them escape, but the twist to the film will take audiences breathes away.

The plot twist is out and Kevin's multiple personality has been exposed to the audience, Kevin say's as though he is in the women's personality "  Don't worry he's not allowed to touch you, he knows what you're here for, he listens to me" .

This texts comes up one by one and with the beat od the music, as the beat drops in the music a line of text appears on the screen.

The next sequence in the trailer is the bravest of the girls speaking to one of the different personalities of Kevin. This character is sat in the door way of were the girls are being kept and is wearing a bright yellow tracksuit and is speaking as though he is a young child with a lisp to end of his words. The character says "My names Hedrick" and the then the girl replies saying "How old are you?" and He replies confidently "Nine".

Loud thuds of non diegetic music comes on loud and bold in the background of when the release months of the film comes up on the screen.

Another new character is introduced to the audience through the film trailer, She is a doctor who deals with Kevin's 23 different personalities. She says "I have never seen a case like this before, 23 identities live in Kevin's body". This shows that the Kevin is an unusual character and this could attract a wider audience.

Film poster research

Black Swan Film Poster

The main image of this poster is of the main character,
this image dominates the poster and will take most
of the attention from the audience.
The focus on her eye contact looking forwards will also entice a bigger audience as they will be dragged in by the look of mysteriousness of her eyes.
I think that the crack on her face represents the genre of the film, this is because her face is presented very symmetrical and her make up is edited perfectly. Therefore this huge crack that stands out shows her life isn't perfect like her appearance.
The dark background of the film poster is black and adds to the spookiness of the main characters eyes. Although with the dark background the main attraction of this poster is the girls face and eyes.
The film titles are in a gold coloured font and are faded out towards the bottom of the film poster, this is because most audiences aren't too bothered about the film credits. However the actors that star in the film 'Black swan', names are displayed just a little further down than mid way of the poster. These are spread into three names, all in black font. Under this is the title of the film, the masthead. This is in black bold writing. This bold black font also is a contrast to the pale skinned background and would stand out to the audience.

To the left of the poster a film magazine company 'Empire' has quoted the film performance, this connotes to the audience that a global film magazine company has given the film 'Black Swan' a good review. This review will attract the audience to see if they can relate to review.

The girl on the train Film Poster

The first thing that attracts an audience to this poster is the outside boarder of what looks like a train window. This is a bold abstracted boarder and sets the scene of the film without looking at the title of the film. The train window has a women's pale face starting to appear to the right hand side of the poster. This is presented as the main character of the film and she looks as though she is looking very seriously at what is on the outside of the train window. The poster has been edited a little bit to show you that she is looking at a house in the reflection in the window, this will make the audience want to watch the film to see what this house means to her.

The masthead of the film looks as though its in a moving motion of the direction of what the train is travelling. This will indicate to the audience that the film is based mainly on a train, especially when the masthead is 'The girl on the train'. Under the masthead a short tag line saying ' based on the novel that shocked the world' describes the film as shocking the world, this could attract a bigger audience as they would want to see how shocking this film is.
Likewise at the bottom of the film poster just above the film credits it says 'What did she see?' this is used in contrast to the image on the poster of her looking out of the train window at something, the audience will want to know what she is looking at?

At the bottom of the poster under the credits the cinema release date is in bold, blue writing and is spaced out clearly. This has been positioned at the bottom of the poster because it will be the last thing that the audience will see after looking at eh other details on the poster. It is important for film posters to have the cinema/DVD release date on the poster advertising their films because the audience will want to know when they can watch the films that are being advertised.

Orphan

The first thing the audiences eyes will be drawn to will be the eye catching tag line 'There's something wrong with Esther'. This tag line will make the audience want to watch the film Orphan and find out what is wrong with Esther. The font of the tag line is bold and big and stands out from the back ground. The tag line is also short and to the point, this is common on most film posters.

This film poster is very simple and straight to the point in the sense that the main character takes up more than half of the space of the film poster. She has a very mysterious look to her and has lots of black shadows on and around her face. She also has blacked out eyes that are looking straight into the audiences eyes, this will also create a mysterious sense to the film. The main character will also draw attention to what she is wearing, she is in a patterned dress that looks like a school dress and has a red velvet choker around her pale neck and the look is finished off with two bunches in her hair that are tied up with blue ribbon. Everything is in place, nothing is out of place. This represents the weirdness of the main character and how she could be an Orphan.

The title of the film is in a font that looks as though a child (an orphan) has written the word 'Orphan' with a white pen, it stands out on the poster because everything is neat and in its place and this writing is in contrast to the rest of the poster.

Research film magazine covers

Research Film Magazine Covers

How are they laid out?

From my research of what film magazine covers look like I can say that all of them are very similar to each other. All of them are landscape, with a medium sized title right at the top of the page, which is followed by the company name of the magazine. All of which are put into the fore ground of the magazine because a picture of a recognisable character of the film being advertised is brought to the front of the magazine and edited to stand out over anything else on the magazine cover.

The magazine cover also has lots of smaller text that advertises the release dates of other films for example this magazine cover example has a still shot of one of the Avatar characters, with a small quote to entice an audience to read the magazine. All film magazine covers have their barcode and price on the bottom right hand corner; this is put at the bottom corner of the magazine because it should be the last thing that catches the reader’s eye.

What is the target audience?

For this part of my research I used the magazine film company ‘Total Film’. This film company is popular in the UK and publishes 13 times a year. For this company to know their main target audience they create an audience profile every year. In 2016 this recorded that 75% of film magazine buyers are men and the average age of people buying Total Film magazines is 26 years old. This tells big film magazine companies such as Total Film what they can and should advertise on the front of their magazine covers. For example the example magazine covers which advertises the hit film Shutter Island has the main character holding a gun and has a very serious facial expression. This connotes that this is a film for an audience who is 18 years or above. This is because this character shows a persona of a violent nature.

Film magazine research

Shutter Island

This film magazine is created by the well known magazine film company called 'Total Film'. This company is advertised on the front of this magazine just under the masthead, the word 'Total Film' is in big bold white lettering and stands out.

The masthead is positioned at the top of the magazine, in bright red lettering that has a smudged effect to it to which creates a mysterious look. The masthead says ' Greatest movie art ever' This will attract a wider audience because the word 'Greatest' is used to promote all the films that are promoted in this magazine. Underneath the masthead there is a tag line that says ' Top filmmakers show us their sketchbooks!' an audience could see this as another selling point of the magazine because not only will they see films being advertised but they will also see the filmmakers sketchbooks of their all time favourite films. Followed by the tag line is the Total Film website for anyone who wants to find out more information about the film magazines Total Film.

Beside the masthead in the top left hand corner of the front cover is a puff, this is a small still picture of a character in a film. This is used to also advert the film but catches the attention of the audience straight away as it positioned next to the masthead which is what the audience would read first.

The main attraction of this front cover is the main character of the film 'Shutter Island', He is wearing a long suited coat, suit trousers, a tie and is holding a small shot gun by the side of him. He also has a police badge on his belt and has his other hand scrunched into a fist. To add to this dominate figure his face has lots of shadows on it and this shows him to be looking very angry and determined. Along side of this to the left of the front cover there is some text that is titled ' Dicaprio Exclusive' and then begins to advertise the film by naming the film title and talking about the main character 'Leo' taking over the asylum. This is a clever way of the magazine cover to advertise who is in the film without just saying the actors name about the film credits.

To the right of the main character on the front cover is a still picture of the main character from the Avatar film. This has a smudged red boarder around it just like the smudged masthead lettering. This red themed front cover connotes lots of danger in the films advertised. And finally the front cover finishes with a short snappy sentence of what else is advertised within the magazine and the barcode of this magazine.

Ex _ Machina

The masthead of this magazine cover is 'The terminator 30th anniversary special', the terminator part of this masthead is in a black bold font and the rest of the masthead is in a pale purple bold colour. This is to separate it from the company logo of the magazine 'Total Film'. This is displayed on the magazine because this company takes responsibility of what is in the magazine. Along side this there is a small action figure from an action film in the top right hand corner, this is called a puff and is used also to advertise the film it is from.

The main characters in the film are in the middle section of the front cover, the two male characters are in the background either side of the girl who is placed in front of the two other characters. She is half human half machine and this will tell the audience why the film is called Ex_Machina.

Annotate in detail the front cover of a film magazine

Inception magazine front cover

The colour scheme and layout of this magazine is very similar to the colours used throughout the film inception and the 3D background that creates a futuristic look to it is very much used for the DVD cover of this film. This is a good selling point for an audience as they will recognise the DVD cover from the film magazine Empire who has used similar layouts, backgrounds and colours to what the film has.

The masthead is placed at the top of the magazine cover, a few inches above where the main character is. Empire is a well -established magazine and uses the film ‘Inception’ as the main selling point of this issue. The bold lettering of the masthead ‘The dark knight returns’ is presented at the top of the page, this is an advertisement of the Batman films and by putting this as the title it would influence more people to read the magazine.

The main character is the first thing that will catch people’s attention. This is because the magazine company have positioned him so that he is in front of the 3D background and titles. He also stands out because of what he is wearing and like most male actors, he is wearing a suit and holding a gun close beside him. The way in which this character is presented on this magazine is very stereotypical.

The directors name ‘Christopher Nolan’s’ is positioned in the centre of the main character and just above the title Inception. This connotes that he directed the film and this is a selling point because the audience might be influenced by other films this director might have produced.
Another selling point would be the main actor who takes up more than half of the magazine cover. Leonardo DiCaprio, his name doesn’t need to be added to the cover as he is a recognisable actor who has starred in many films such as; The Titanic, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.

The comparison of the Matrix film and 007 Bond films of other genres markets their films to different audiences.
The barcode is located in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine and is on small scale in comparison to everything g else on the cover. This is probably the last thing that you will notice when looking at the front of any film magazine.  Film magazines will also display the price near the bar code and this is the final element that the audience will look at before buying .

The text that is written either side of the main character is displayed in a way as though the still picture is moving. This effect not only advertises the other films that are promoted in this magazine but it creates a mysterious feel for the film Inception.
The gun in this shot is iconography for an action/thriller/ sci-fi films and indicates that the film will be in fast past to connote the tension in the film.

Small print of the magazine company’s website empireonline.com is provided for those who want to find out more about the releases of films that are promoted in this magazine.
