Analyses of the film trailer:
The film trailer of split starts off with non diegetic sound that is a high pitched noise of glasses clanging together. The music creates a mysterious feel to the start of the film trailer giving the genre to the audience straight away without having to see the whole trailer. It then goes into a tracking shot of three teenage girls and a man walking in a straight line through a car park, these characters are shown through a birds eye view shot.
Fast past cross cuts are used to show that something or someone dangerous is approaching the man at the boot of the car as he putting the shopping away. A close up of the mans face is shown at the end of the fast past cross cuts, this connotes his fear of what is in front of him. Also to add to this whatever is approaching him is demonstrated through a point of view shot to make it look as though the thing approaching him is the camera man.
To add to this the non diegetic music has a loud 'boom' to it as it cross cuts to the girls sat in the girl then the diegetic sound of the girls chatting fades in.
Non diegetic sound is used to create suspense in the trailer, a sudden loud drop noise is used as the girl in the front seat of the car notices something isn't right. A close up shot of the side mirror on the car shows the food that the man was carrying had been dropped on the floor.
A mid shot shows the main actor James McAvoy, he has both arms stretch out onto the car steering wheel and has his eyes looking straight ahead of him. He looks very serious and as though he is a danger to the girls sat in the car. One of the girls in the back of the car says "Hey pardon me sir I think you have the wrong car" and as she says that he turns around with a white hygiene mask over his mouth and nose and sprays something from a white ganister and knocks the girls out.
A loud non diegetic noise is made and then the acting fades to black and the film company logo and name is presented onto the screen.
This then cuts into a tracking shot of under ground pipes moving towards an arch under ground, this goes along with non diegetic sound of loud high notes spaced out from each other to create tension. One of the voices of the girls says '"what are we doing here" and then another one says "what the hell is going on". One of the girls whispers "what are we doing here",
over the top of the non diegetic music that is causing more tension to go with the fast past shots.
This then flashes back to the underground shot of the pipes and the arch way. And then flashes back to the main character Kevin walking through a wooden door. And he say's in a creepy voice " I was sent to get you for a reason", this shows his mind is being controlled by something or someone else and links to the psychological thriller genre of the film. This then goes into a loud scream for help when one the girls shouts "No open the door" . The music becomes louder and the motion tracking shot towards the dark arch underground becomes faster and closes to the end of the pipes. As the girl shouts "No open the door" a long shot is shown of the main character Kevin drilling a door shut, this connotes to the audience that he has power over the girls and is the main focus of the film. This along with the creepy music is very stereotypical of psychological thriller genre films to have. This is because these films aim to create the audience to feel anxious of what is going to happen during the film and to have the sitting on the edge of your seat effect.
One of the girls realises that there's several yellow flowers placed around where they're being held hostage. She say's "There's a flower on the pillows, a flower in the bathroom like we're important". And then another girl who is crying and feeling scared says " the only way we have of escaping is if we all go crazy on this guy". It then shows the girls looking through the gap in the door of the room they're being kept in, they can see a lady in a skirt who is wearing high heels. One of the girls says " Who is that maybe she can help us" and over the top of that another girl screams "we're here help us, please, we're in here" pleading for help. However the film has a twist as it introduces a new character to the audience, Kevin dressed up as a women and showing the audience one of his many different personalities. The audience will feel for the girls as they think that by seeing this women it is someone different to Kevin and that this women will help them escape, but the twist to the film will take audiences breathes away.
The plot twist is out and Kevin's multiple personality has been exposed to the audience, Kevin say's as though he is in the women's personality " Don't worry he's not allowed to touch you, he knows what you're here for, he listens to me" .
This texts comes up one by one and with the beat od the music, as the beat drops in the music a line of text appears on the screen.
The next sequence in the trailer is the bravest of the girls speaking to one of the different personalities of Kevin. This character is sat in the door way of were the girls are being kept and is wearing a bright yellow tracksuit and is speaking as though he is a young child with a lisp to end of his words. The character says "My names Hedrick" and the then the girl replies saying "How old are you?" and He replies confidently "Nine".
Loud thuds of non diegetic music comes on loud and bold in the background of when the release months of the film comes up on the screen.
Another new character is introduced to the audience through the film trailer, She is a doctor who deals with Kevin's 23 different personalities. She says "I have never seen a case like this before, 23 identities live in Kevin's body". This shows that the Kevin is an unusual character and this could attract a wider audience.
