Watch film trailers - Orpahn

Watching and analysing Psychological thriller film trailers

Here I created a mood board of different shots from the trailer Orphan, the trailer includes the following:
  •  The trailer starts off with cheerful music and sets the scene of an orphanage were there are lots of children waiting to be adopted
  • The little girl that the parents are introduced to tells the audience her name 'Ester'
  • The dialog continues between the parents and the little girl, the mum asks why she wasn't at the part and Ester replies saying "I never really see the point of it, I guess I'm different"
  • We are then shown the parents driving Ester home with them and saying "this is your home too" suggesting to the audience the parents have adopted her
  • Tow other young characters are introduced when they're inside the house these characters are called Danni and Max
  • Another setting in introduced, Ester begins school and is picked on for what she is wearing
  • As the girls finish there nasty joke towards Ester, the music begins to deepen and turn into more of a siren noise
  • Fast past shots then turn to Ester in a toilet cubical kicking the walls and letting her frustration out from the nasty joke that was made to her
  • As Ester is becoming more angry in the toilet, different shots from the film are shown the first being, the mum trying to get into Esters room but she's has locked the door
  • It then flashes back to her kicking the toilet again and then shows the parents and a professional sat in a room talking about Ester and the professional says " something g is happening to cause Ester to feel this way", this tells the audience that the parents are concerned about Ester and that something g isn't quite right about her
  • The music then cuts to a silence and a close up of Esters face screaming is shown along with loud diegetic screaming from Ester
  • This then fades to black and the music is cut
  • The screen then comes up with " There's something wrong with Ester" and a worried lady's voice repeats what is displayed on the screen
  • A black cut is put in before a close up shot of a chained swing is rotating round and round
  • Creaky music is added to this swing action
  • Another still fade to black is used and the same ladies voice says " We need to know what we're dealing with"
  • It then cuts back to mid shot of the swing chains moving back and forth along with the same creaky noise as before
  • Another still fade to black appears on the screen and the women's voice says "Trouble does have a way of finding her"
  • It then cuts quickly to a close up shot of Ester face looking very serious and determined as she is sat on the swing
  • A fast past cut to black comes in as the mums concerned voice says "What kind of trouble?"
  • Dramatic music cuts in as several different angled shots, low angle, high angles and a birds eye view are shown of a little girl falling from the slide at the park
  • It then cuts to black
  • And quickly cuts to Ester standing at the top of slide where the little girl has just fallen from
  • This then cuts to a white background and the words " You'll never guess her secret" comes up on the screen
  • It then cuts to the mum on the phone in a birds eye view to a Russian doctor who is talking about Ester

Watch Film trailers - The girl on the train

Watching and analysing Psychological thriller film trailers

The girl on the train trailer features:

  • The first shot is one of the main characters being introduced within seconds of the trailers, dialog is used by this character
  • A fast past cut to a tracking shot of a big white house is matched with the diegetic sound of a high pitched piano note being played as soon as the cut happens
  • These piano notes continue along with many different fast cut shots of the main character and different settings
  • The main character continues with more dialog and along with this is more diegetic music but this time the tempo is louder and more dramatic
  • The trailer then cuts to a blank screen with the words "A week ago" like most psychological thriller there is a change in time and the film will swap from past to present a lot, this is to create suspense
  • The high pitched piano notes continue along with fast past background music to fit well with the fast past shots showing the audience an insight to the main characters life
  • The trailer then cuts to another blank screen that says "At 4:36pm"
  • The music becomes faster and more intense as the main character is shown in a tracking shot of her running under a bridge
  • Lots of fast past shots of the girl running under the bridge and a train moving in fast past, this montage of fast past shots along with the dramatic music creates will make the audience start guessing what this film could be about
  • A blank screen saying "A women Disappeared" appears on the screen, viewers will now have the knowledge from these blank screens that "A week ago, at 4:36pm a women disappeared". This almost sounds like a news paper headline or a police report and most stereotypical psychological film trailers and films have new reports of the person in the filming going missing or being abducted.
  • A new character, another main character is introduced to the audience, she is shown on a train
  • She says in a panicked voice "I saw her from the train", a fast shot then shows a train speeding over a bridge
  • A fade to black is used to show a blank screen saying "Based on the thriller that shocked the world" this is used to make the film sound as though its the best film of this genre to be released this year so that a bigger audience will watch it
  • As the fade to black comes on the screen the loud and slowed down original song of 'Kanye West's, how could you be so heartless' is played throughout the trailer
  • Loads more fast past shots are used to show several different settings in the film for example; the train, the bridge, the woods, a flat and a pavement
  • In these fast past shots more characters are unveiled throughout the trailer
  • The trailer continues with the mystery of where the girl has gone missing and if she is alive or dead
  • The reason as to why this trailer has a psychological thriller genre is because of all the generic conventions I have listed above that are stereotypically used for most psychological films and trailers.
